THE SAVANNAH – EXOTIC LOOKS – DOMESTIC PERSONALITY

WHAT DOES A SAVANNAH CAT LOOK LIKE

Savannahs were developed in the USA and are now found throughout the world. A Savannah should be tall, long, lean and muscular with individual well defined spots and large ears set on top of its head, the Savannah has the look of the wild cat with the temperament of the domestic cat.

Savannahs have long legs, a noticeably long neck and long lean muscular body, neither compact nor stocky in build. They should look athletic and appear ready to spring into action.

The head is small in proportion to the body. The face is angular, not round and the ears are large, rounded at the tip and sit straight up. The face should be an equilateral triangle, running along the top of the eyes and the two other sides of the triangle run down the straight sides of the angular face to the broad puffy nose leather.

FOOD

Savannahs eat domestic cat food, faithfully use litter boxes and will live in a house as with other domestic cats. As with other hybrid cats, Savannahs sometimes have an intolerance to some additives in processed food, so it is wise to keep your Savannah on the food he is used to eating.

BEHAVIOUR

High energy and playfulness added to a sociable nature makes the Savannahs almost dog-like as a pet. Not normally a lapcat, they prefer to be on your shoulder and enjoy lots of your company and cuddles. They will follow you around the house, come when called and fetch toys for hours. They love to go on walks on a harness and love to play in water.

Savannahs often inherit a tendency to be unconcerned about being wet. They often enjoy splashing about in a little water with ping pong balls. A running tap is seen as a toy that moves, something to be pounced on and batted at. If you wish to encourage your savannah to play with water, take it slowly and turn on your shower at a trickle first, then gradually you may find that they like to join you in the shower.

Remember not to leave your bath running unsupervised whilst your Savannah is a kitten, and remember to leave your toilet seat down at all times.

Sometimes water bowls are more tempting to play in that drink from making a watery mess of the floor. Try placing the water bowl inside a small clean litter tray that will collect the water and save the floor becoming a soggy mess.
